jean vest

hat: Urban Outfitters; sunglasses: Prada; shoes: ZARA (sold out, love these lace ups for fall)}

I bought a vest a few years ago and I honestly wore it maybe once.  I realized I was not a vest girl.  But then I saw this Madewell one and loved the way they styled it on their website - with a striped tee and also a denim shirt - so I bought it instantly.  But most of my striped tees and denim shirts are long-sleeved (or boxy or cropped) so I went with a classic white tee / black denim combo.  I already have a few other ideas for this vest.  So maybe I am a vest girl after all.  But now I realize I need to do some more shopping.

falling for . . . free people

It was raining most of the day so I thought I would put together a post of the pieces I've been eyeing for fall from Free People.  Nothing speaks fall to me more than Free People (see hereherehere, here and here of some of my favourite FP pieces/looks from last year).  My fall must-haves this year include a (new) denim shirt, a striped tee, a plaid shirt, cozy sweaters, a pair of flared jeans, sweater dresses and a denim jacket to top it all off.  What pieces or trends are you most excited for?

crop top & overalls

overalls: Topshop; bracelets: H&M (old); hat: Urban Outfitters; sunglasses: Prada}

I thought this crop top was super adorable and then it arrived and I thought, what the heck was I thinking?  I have gained a little bit of weight since moving to South Carolina (o.m.g. the food!), but I said F.U. to my fitness app and enjoyed the summer, especially since my sister who loves chips and ice cream as much as I do was visiting for the past month.  Only problem was when I wanted to wear this crop top, I was not comfortable wearing it with my, ahem, a bit-too-tight-now high-waisted shorts, which is what I would normally wear a crop top with.  So rather than looking like a stuffed sausage (mmm sausage) and feeling uncomfortable or having to return this top (a score at under $50!), I had to think of a quick solution.  Around the same time, I was drooling over all of the overalls I keep seeing for fall (like these and these) and it came to me... Overalls!  I couldn't buy a pair of the ones I've been drooling over since it's deathly hot here, so I decided on these white ones, which will take me into fall with a striped tee, cardigan and booties.

hello, goodbye

(photo via my Instagram)

Hello, weekend!  My son started Grade 1 on Thursday so it's been hectic and exhausting getting back into a routine, but I'm so excited for him!  I feel so grateful that I'm now a SAHM.  I love that I'm able to drive him to school in the morning... and then walking up to my house and being greeted by this mat.  It puts a smile on my face every time.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

smells like summer . . . and fall-ish

shoes: MICHAEL Michael Kors (bought in-store, found here and here); sunglasses: Prada}

Fall fashion is everywhere now and I'm so excited that I'll basically be able to experience my favourite season until spring now that I live in Myrtle Beach.  The only problem is that it won't start for a couple more months.  Not that I'm complaining!  They say it still gets cold here, but I saw the other day that I only blogged once in February (it was so cold!) and I just heard that some Canadians swim here in February.  I probably won't be swimming, but this is the first time I'm actually looking forward to winter because who gets excited to shop for a parka?  I do however get very excited to shop for sweaters.  So I've started looking for pieces that I can wear now through, well, basically every season here.  This dress will be perfect with booties and eventually my favourite Stuart Weitzman over-the-knee boots.  I love brights for the cooler temps and have been looking for a new hat.  This one is 100% wool so it'll keep your head warm.  Not that I'll need it.

knotted

A cotton candy pit stop.

{top: Anthropologie (bought in-store); Tularosa Nora Shorts in White
shoes: ZARA; hat; bralette (similar): Talula; bag: Urban Outfitters; sunglasses: Prada}

We spent five hours walking around and going on rides at Broadway at the Beach.  Thankfully I wore these shorts because they are SO comfortable.  At first, I wanted to pair this tank with something simpler and more fitted to let the eyelet details of the tank to stand out, but this tank was too long for most of my shorts and I definitely was not going to put on a pair of jeans, which would be my ideal pair of pants for this length of a top (white skinny jeans would look great).  I was thinking of comfort when I put on these shorts because it was so hot, but I love how the details of the shorts peek out from underneath the top.  I thought the details would be overkill, but sometimes when you think something isn't going to work, the only way to know for sure is to try it on and sometimes you'll be surprised.

trouser shorts, comfy wedges and a $12 tee

{Madewell Sun-Up Tee in Stripe; Blank Denim Trouser Shorts*; bracelet: BCBG; ring: Free People;

I paid about $12 for this tee and it actually made me excited about the fact that I can now buy things on sale and still wear them a decent amount the same year.  I have never (since college when I was the I-bought-this-for-$10 queen) been a big sales person because by the time things go on sale, say end of summer, there's no point IMO in buying them because 1) it's starting to get cool in Canada mid-September so I'd maybe get to wear said sale item once and 2) fall clothes are my favourite so once those pieces start showing up on my favourite sites or in stores, forget it.  But now living in Myrtle Beach, there's no point in starting to buy fall stuff because it won't get cool here I'm told until about October or even November.  (OK, I may have bought a fall Free People dress because there was only one left in my size!)  So today I actually only looked for sale items, which is a strange feeling because I would never even think about buying a pair of shorts or crop top (scored this one!) this time of year in Canada.  But I will say, I will be jealous of all the Instagram shots of my fav NYC bloggers in sweaters, but at the same time, I will be buying those pieces on sale when it's time for me to start wearing them.

denim on denim and a burger joint

I was in the mood for a (veggie) burger and fries, so we tried out River City Cafe and O.M.G. their burgers are amazing.  Messy with loads of flavour, I inhaled my burger (and fries).  The atmosphere is fun and colourful too.

After dinner we stopped for ice cream (as per usual).  Kirk's 1890 Ice Cream Parlor has amazing ice cream flavours.  (Ice cream not shown because I inhaled that too.)

{top: Marc by Marc Jacobs (old, love this one); shorts: One Teaspoon;
ring: Free People (love these); bracelet: Coach; necklace: Guess; shoes: ASOS (similar in black);
bag: Urban Outfitters; sunglasses: Prada}

When dressing for a burger joint I immediately thought casual, which led me to denim on denim.  I have been eyeing this Marc by Marc Jacobs tee in my closet since we moved because I now have a walk-in closet and can see everything I own, but usually end up wearing a tank because it's so hot out.  But because we were eating close to the water I thought I would be OK.  (I wasn't, I was sweating to death.)  I'm trying really hard to pull pieces out of my closet that I have not worn in a while.  I was so close to buying an almost-identical denim tee from Madewell (link above) that made me rethink my life choices when I remembered that I HAVE YET TO WEAR THAT DENIM TEE IN MY CLOSET.  Lesson learned: one should not buy a denim tee when one already has a denim tee in their closet that they barely wear.  Because that tee will probably get worn only once or twice too.  So even though I ended up sweating to death, I'm glad I finally wore it.

flamingos dancin'

{Wildfox Couture Flamingos Dancin' Hiker Tank; shorts: Levi's (bought at Aritzia); hat: Talula;
bikini: Splendid (old, love this one); sandals: Adidas; sunglasses: Prada}

We don't head to the beach as often as I thought we would, but it's a whole thing...making sure you have enough water, food; trying to find parking.  It's just a lot easier (and quicker) going to our community pool.  But after spending a couple of hours at the beach I thought, 'we need to do this more often!'.  There's just something about being at the beach.  The waves are so calming, sand under your toes.  Once you let go of the fact that there will be sand everywhere, from inside your bikini to your food, you can enjoy every minute.  And we did.

After the beach we headed to Johnny D's Waffles & Bakery for brunch.  I could not decide what to order so I ordered the bacon and eggs and gave my daughter the pancakes and, of course, ordered the red velvet waffles.  Everything was SO delicious!
